Solo exhibition Lakenhal and Scheltema, Leiden (nl)
photo's: Floren van Olden (opening) and Jeroen Doorenweerd
Since 1991, Doorenweerd has been working on projects in public space, with a focus on the relationship between works of art, design, architecture and landscape. Especially for this project, he returns to the museum for a short while, after a long absence. In the gallery of De Lakenhal that shows 17th-century paintings, Doorenweerd uses wood and linen to create an enclosed space that affords a view of a painting; a river view by Jan van Goyen. Outside this space, state-of-the-art sound equipment is set up with DoorenweerdĂs own collection of classical music on vinyl. Museum attendants will put a new record on the turn table for each new visitor. In DoorenweerdĂs view, a museum offers peace and quiet, concentration, edification. On the one hand, his installation is a large and bold statement; on the other hand, it restores the perception of the art of painting to its very essence, to a perception of utter concentration.
Together with De Lakenhal, Doorenweerd also developed an installation in Scheltema. Doorenweerd built a meditation room, where visitors are invited to sit, and even attend lessons by meditation teachers.
In the room next to the meditation cube a work called 'home entertainment' is installed. This piece presents a specific selection of video footage of live performances by rock bands such as Dead Moon, Sonic Youth, The Stooges and The Fall on a retro seventies 'video-wall' consisting of 15 old, non flatscreen, tv's.
